1993 was the anniversary of the one hundredth Ladies' Single Championship at Wimbledon. Defending champion Steffi Graf has her sights set on a fifth Wimbledon title and fresh from victory at the French Open, she had progressed through the draw with her usual prowess, not dropping a set en route to the final. Jana Novotna had an equally impressive run, had beaten the number two seed, Martina Navartilova, on Centre Court in the Semi-Final.
