Back at Wembley, Manchester United were determined to make amends for their previous years defeat to Southampton, but facing treble chasing Liverpool, the Merseysiders were odds on favourite to clinch the Cup.

The match was a tight affair, as both teams successfully managed to cancel each other out. But then came a frantic five minutes just after half time, which saw the trophy heading back to Old Trafford for the 4th time in their history.

Liverpool fought hard to equalise, and Ray Kennedy rattled the bar in the closing stages, but it was United's day as they avenged the heartache suffered 12 months earlier and denied their Northwest rivals of the much-coveted treble.
